Central Board of Direct Taxes sought report on “income- tax refund scam”

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has sought a detailed report from the field formation in Mumbai over the reported “income- tax refund scam” in that jurisdiction. “The Government has called for a report. We are monitoring the situation,” sources in the CBDT told today.

Till Wednesday, no insider of the Income-Tax Department has been identified in any wrong doing. “It looks as if some external people were involved, but we have to wait for the complete information,” official sources said.

Indications are that the findings of the report, once obtained, will be placed before the Finance Minister. CBDT also maintained that the amount involved was not as high as Rs 41 crore as reported in certain sections of the media.

Meanwhile, a CBI spokesman said that the matter has come to the notice of the investigation agency. However, no case has been registered as yet.

“Only if a case is registered can an investigation begin. More details can be shared only if a case is registered,” the spokesman added.

CBDT is merely a subordinate office under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance and cannot commit anything unless allowes/approved/cleared by the authorities. Many of the ills of the CBDT and the IT deptt. flow from the uncalled for and unlawful interference of the deptt. of Revenue, for obvious reasons/factors. So, to blame the CBDT alone for this gteat robbery will be rather unjustified, though most of the officers in this deptt. are indeed not above board, in keeping with the culture of the entire bureaucracy in India.
Let us wait for some time to see what the CBDT does. It is also necessary now to take a decision about the crores of rupees lying in the Suspense A/c in the Treasury, collected as Income-tax and pending adjustment/refund, for decades.
